Coming Soon: The Promenade

A street in Philadelphia with late 18th century architecture. The street is lined with trees shedding orange and yellow leaves.

Mrs. Cassey, a pillar of the free Black community in 1825 Philadelphia, loves God and gossip-- usually in that order. Her husband and five daughters have learned to go along with her strictures and fainting spells. But when a wealthy and single gentleman arrives to work with the Free African Society of Philadelphia, the race is on among Philadelphia's Black mothers to claim him for one of their daughters. Will the school he plans for Philadelphia's free Black community succeed? Will he agree with the community's plans for the school? And foremost in Mrs. Cassey's mind, will he take one of her daughters off her hands?
